Magnetic Field Therapy and Grounding-Can they Work Together?
Hello Everyone,
Welcome to this Week’s Magna Blog Newsletter
Magnetic field therapy has been around since the time of Cleopatra, while grounding (or earthing) is a more recent health trend. Though both involve electromagnetic forces, they work in fundamentally different ways. Let’s break it down.
This is a shortened version of a recent blog post. See the full version here: qmagnets.com/magnetic-therapy-vs-grounding-whats-the-difference/
Grounding (Earthing): Restoring Electrical Balance
Grounding is based on the idea that direct contact with the Earth allows free electrons to enter the body, neutralizing oxidative stress and inflammation.
It’s thought that this electrical imbalance has become common, particularly with modern city living. Being surrounded by insulating materials such as carpets and concrete and always wearing insulating soled shoes for instance.
How It Works:
As we lose grounding touch-points, our bodies natural loss of electrons over time causes us to become relatively positively charged with respect to the Earth.
Since the Earth is now negatively charged with respect to our body, electrons flow into the body when we walk barefoot or use grounding mats.
This process is believed to reduce inflammation and improve sleep.
Example:
Walking barefoot on the beach refreshes you because electrons help stabilize electrical charge imbalances in your body.
Magnetic Field Therapy with Q Magnets: Modulating Pain and Nerve Function
Unlike grounding, Q Magnets use static multipolar magnetic fields to influence nerve function and pain perception.
How It Works:
Magnetic field gradients interact with nerves, helping modulate pain.
Static fields influence ion channels to reduce pain signaling and inflammation.
Example:
Placing a Q Magnet on an area of pain modifies how nerve cells transmit pain signals, helping reduce discomfort—without transferring charge.
There are no electrons (or charge) being transferred from the magnet into the body. Static magnets are permanent magnets, meaning they remain magnetized for years and don’t need recharging. This is because the unpaired electrons in the magnetic material are aligned and spin in the same direction, producing a stable magnetic field that penetrates the body.

Breaking Down the Differences
Can Grounding and Magnetic Therapy Work Together?
Yes! They operate differently but can complement each other. Q Blankets provide a widespread magnetic field, making them a great addition to grounding mats for overall wellness. For targeted pain relief, individually placed Q Magnets directly influence nerve function.
If you’re using a grounding mat, always place it on top of any magnetic blanket, like Q Blankets. Grounding mats require direct contact with your skin to be effective. While magnetic fields pass through grounding mats without obstruction, keeping the magnet as close to the body as possible is ideal—but direct contact isn’t necessary.
Everytime we wash our hands or have a shower, we are grounding. So for most people, I suspect there is little benefit to a grounding mat. But that's where grounding and Q magnets are very similar. They are very safe and a relatively low-cost health intervention. The worst thing that can happen-is nothing.

Trigeminal Neuralgia and TMJ Pain
Trigeminal Neuralgia is a relatively rare, but serious condition we have been tracking with Q magnets use for over 10 years with over 30 cases. While our experiences are still anecdotal, there are enough successful cases to show it's well worth considering.
Recently the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association Australia published an article about Q magnets, as a treatment that may help manage chronic pain. The article also quotes one of our Newsletters in its entirety, so we do our best to provide a complete understanding!
