Dianne Hermans, a physiotherapist with a keen interest in treating complex and chronic pain understood the power of Quadrapolar magnets and how to use them better than anyone, except maybe the neurologist who pioneered much of the early research.

This was 26 years ago.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from these events, it’s this:

The real divide in medicine isn’t between “believers” and “sceptics”.

It’s between those who are closed… and those who are open enough to explore.


At a recent medical acupuncture conference, something unexpected happened.

A doctor stopped at our stand. She had never come across static magnetic therapy before. No pre-formed position. No rehearsed scepticism. Just curiosity.

We spoke briefly. Mechanisms. Clinical observations. Field gradients. Placement.

And then she said something that stayed with me:

“A doctor’s position should be strong opinions, loosely held.”

What Does That Actually Mean?

It sounds simple. It isn’t.

It goes to the core of how medicine either evolves… or gets stuck.

Strong opinions → you need a working model
Loosely held → you must be willing to update it

Without strong opinions, you drift.
Without flexibility, you calcify.

Good clinicians operate in that narrow space between conviction and humility.

The Problem With “Settled” Thinking

Both challenged prevailing assumptions.
Both were dismissed.

Modern Medicine Still Faces the Same Trap

We like to think those days are behind us. They’re not. They’ve just evolved.

Today, the resistance doesn’t always look like open hostility. It often shows up as:

• “There’s no evidence”

• “That’s not how biology works”

• “It’s been debunked”

But when you look closely, what’s often missing is not evidence…

…it’s a framework that can accommodate the evidence.

Where Magnetic Therapy Sits

Most therapy devices operate by delivering energy into tissue.

Static magnetic fields are different, they establish a persistent field environment, within which biological processes occur.

Because the body itself is an electrical system, many of these processes are sensitive to physical fields, particularly ion movement, membrane behaviour, and vascular regulation, which operate close to functional thresholds.

Within this environment, subtle shifts can occur:

• ion movement can be influenced

• membrane dynamics can change

• signalling thresholds may shift

On their own, these effects are small.

But biology doesn’t always respond in a linear way.

There was a time, not that long ago, when patients with chronic pain underwent procedures that permanently destroyed nerves.

Cordotomies. Rhizotomies. Neurectomies.

Some tools are built for performance.

Some are built for recovery.

Very few stay with you for life.

This week we received an unexpected LinkedIn reply from former Swiss speed skiing world record holder Silvano Meli.

Along with the message, he graciously sent a photo holding the same Q Magnet he first used almost 20 years ago.

The magnet in the photo is one of the original versions we produced in 2008, before the current plastic housing.

Two decades later, it is still in use.

But Silvano’s story didn’t begin with ageing joints.

It began with survival.

Recovery After Catastrophic Injury

Silvano first started using Q magnets in 2009.

Five years earlier he had been involved in a helicopter accident that left him with severe injuries:

• Multiple rib fractures
• Cranial trauma

Few people truly understand the mechanics.

For decades, magnet conversations have been distracted by a simple question:

North pole or south pole?

That narrative was popularised in the 1970s and has lingered in both agriculture and magnetic field therapy ever since. The claim was simple: each pole produces fundamentally different biological effects.

But if that were true, we might expect to see differences in the Earth’s north and south hemispheres and we would definitely expect to see it plant research.

Plants are a very honest test subject.

So here’s the logical question:

If north and south poles truly had fundamentally different biological effects, plants should show it clearly.

Yet modern static magnetic field studies in crops consistently focus on:

This week I heard two very different conversations.

One about cholesterol.
One about sunscreen.

Both made me wonder the same thing:

Have we lost nuance in the way we talk about health?

Recently, Australia’s ABC aired criticism of Dr Ross Walker, a cardiologist known for emphasising lifestyle interventions, nutrition and targeted supplementation.

That alone is interesting. Modern cardiology is largely structured around procedures and pharmaceuticals, which absolutely have their place.

But when a clinician prioritises prevention first, movement, metabolic optimisation, diet and micronutrients it often attracts skepticism.

This week, a family member struggling with fatigue and elevated homocysteine saw Dr Walker. Among other recommendations, he suggested ubiquinol (CoQ10).

The feedback?

“It feels like I’ve gained three extra hours in my day.”

Nothing radical. Nothing mystical.
Just biology supported instead of suppressed.

The larger question isn’t whether lifestyle works.

Some of the clearest examples of magnetic field therapy don’t come from clinics or laboratories. They come from everyday injuries, applied early, with sensible placement.

The Injury

About 15 years ago, a young boy snapped his forefinger back while taking a mark at football training on a Wednesday night. The finger swelled almost immediately.

By Thursday morning, the swelling and bruising were obvious. His father took him to the doctor, who confirmed there was nothing broken — just a severely bruised finger.

That same day, his father took the first photo.

What was done

Instead of strapping or medication, a very simple setup was used.

In the father’s own words:

“I applied two small magnets either side of the middle knuckle, top and bottom.”

This is an important detail. The magnets weren’t placed near the injury — they were placed so the magnetic field passed directly through the injured joint.

Field | Dose | Placement — in real life

This case neatly demonstrates how predictable outcomes tend to be when Field, Dose, and Placement are matched to the injury:

• Field: Multipolar static magnetic field

• Dose: Very small

• Placement: One magnet on either side of the affected finger joint

A finger joint is small, superficial, and localised. It doesn’t require a large magnet or a wide field. Precision matters more than power.

The second photo was taken on Saturday morning — just two days later.

“The other picture was taken on the Saturday morning showing all the bruising had gone and there was no pain.”

The bruising had resolved, the swelling had settled, and the finger was comfortable and functional. Most importantly, the boy was able to play football that weekend.

Why this still matters

We’ve kept this case on our site for years because it highlights something we see again and again:

When magnets are applied as soon as possible after an injury, and when the field and placement match the anatomy, the response is often very consistent and repeatable.

Early application seems to matter.

Small injuries respond best to small, well-placed fields.

Over-treating is rarely helpful.

Children, in particular, tend to respond quickly when the magnetic field is scaled appropriately to their size.

Like many parents, my inbox has recently filled with reminders about kids heading back to school. It got me thinking about something a little less talked about, but very familiar to anyone with children: the inevitable bumps, knocks, and bruises that come with growing up.

Kids fall. They collide with furniture. They misjudge corners in the backyard. It’s part of childhood. And it’s exactly why we’ve always kept Q Magnets close at hand.

A Real-Life Example from Our Family

Years ago, our daughter was running in the backyard late one evening and smashed her shin hard into the guinea pig cage. There were tears, immediate pain, and the sort of impact every parent recognises.

We placed a Q Magnet directly over the area straight away.

That post dates back to 2010, when she was just 11 years old.

Head Knocks and the “Egg” That Never Came

A doctor later relayed a story that has always stuck with me.

A young child hit their head hard on the edge of a table. The parents immediately placed a Q Magnet over the impact area. Instead of the predictable “egg” swelling, there was almost no swelling at all.

After a few days, what remained was a clear white circle beneath where bruising and inflammation would normally be expected.

Hardly any swelling. Hardly any pain.

That kind of response is something we hear again and again when magnets are applied early.

Keeping Kids Playing the Sports They Love

Another example involved a teenage school friend of our daughter, Brooke. She had ongoing knee pain that was stopping her from properly playing hockey, her favourite sport.

For nearly two centuries, physics has treated light as electrically neutral, having no charge. While light can be reflected, focused, or slowed down by materials, its path should not be pushed sideways simply by a magnetic field. That should only be possible if light had a charge.

A new experiment published in Nature Scientific Reports challenges that assumption. When light was sent through a specially structured transparent material inside a strong magnetic field, the beam emerged slightly shifted, as though it had been gently nudged sideways by the field itself.

Light bent in a magnetic field? ~ something it should not do.

This is not the familiar Faraday Effect (where only the polarisation of light rotates).

This new behaviour affected the trajectory of the beam itself, something conventional electromagnetism says should not happen to a neutral wave like light.

Under normal circumstances, sending a beam of light through a magnetic field that points in the same direction shouldn’t change the path of the light at all. Textbooks say the beam should continue perfectly straight.

But in this new experiment, the researchers used a special “handed” transparent material. When a strong magnetic field was applied, the material changed in a very subtle, uneven way, enough to push the light slightly sideways. That tiny sideways shift shouldn’t be possible under traditional physics, which is why the result is so intriguing.

In these conditions, the light behaved as if it possessed a tiny effective charge — not because photons literally have charge, but because new, subtle electromagnetic interactions become measurable.

This doesn’t overturn physics, but it does reveal something important:

Even the most “settled” aspects of electromagnetic theory still contain surprises.

Why This Matters for Magnetic Field Therapy

This discovery isn’t about biological tissue or therapy, but the principle is highly relevant.

Biology is electrically active down to the cellular level:

• ion channels
  

• membrane potentials
  

• action potentials
  

• signal transduction

Static magnetic fields interact with this electro-physiology in ways science is still mapping. The vast majority of what people think they “know” about magnets in biology comes from simple bipolar magnets. Not from gradient-rich multipolar static magnetic fields, such as those used in Q Magnets.

When physics discovers a new electromagnetic behaviour in something as intensely studied as light, it reinforces a broader point:

We still do not fully understand all the ways electromagnetic fields influence the natural world, especially complex biological systems.

This is exactly why Q Magnets focus on:

• magnetic field gradients

Clinicians and patients consistently report improvements in pain, mobility, and function. These effects may be tapping into biological responses that future science will eventually describe more completely. Just as this recent experiment revealed new electromagnetic behaviour in light.

We are careful not to overstate the connection.

But discoveries like this keep the scientific door wide open.

The electromagnetic world is still giving up new secrets.

And static magnetic fields applied in the right way may hold far more potential than conventional wisdom suggests.

A physiotherapist’s 20-year headache… changed in 48 hours

Back in 2002, Dianne Hermans presented a case study at the International Conference of Physiotherapy in Sydney. It involved Lisa, a physiotherapist who had lived with severe, chronic cervical headaches for 20 years following a horse-related whiplash injury. (See conference presentation)

Despite two decades of trying every conventional therapy available — chiropractic, acupuncture, naturopathy, and physiotherapy — nothing made a lasting difference.

Her symptoms were intense:

• Severe left-sided headaches progressing to bilateral

• Daily cervical pain and muscle spasm into the left arm

• Inability to carry weight in her left hand

• Dependence on pain medication (4–8 Mersyndol™ daily, with periodic pethidine injections)

• Limited function as a Women’s Health physiotherapist

As outlined in the presentation, Dianne fitted her with early quadrapolar Q Magnet prototypes — before the modern versions we have today.

• After 48 hours: A clear reduction in headache severity and cervical pain

• After one month: Fewer headaches, less arm pain, greater neck mobility

• After two months: Improved professional function and a return to riding

• After two years: Only occasional headaches, dramatically reduced medication use, and full return to equestrian and gym activities

Pain relief that pays for itself — literally

This event brings together medical doctors from all over the world who are committed to solving complex patient problems, often by integrating evidence-based approaches that minimise the need for drugs or surgery. In that setting, Q magnets fit naturally as a gentle, targeted adjunct that clinicians can use alongside acupuncture, manual therapy, electrotherapy, and other integrative approaches.

Throughout the conference, I had the opportunity to demonstrate how our
Field | Dose | Placement framework helps practitioners apply magnetic fields with precision, predictability and confidence. As is often the case, while many clinicians were familiar with small bipolar magnets, they were surprised and super impressed with these multipolar, high-gradient devices and the supporting published research.

Quite a few doctors were impressed by how compact, rugged and user-friendly the devices are, especially for helping patients self-manage chronic or recurring pain between appointments. It’s always rewarding to see that moment where the underlying science “clicks” and people realise how much more refined multipolar magnetic field therapy is compared with the old single-pole paradigm.
